POSITION : Editor, Yoruba Service

Role Responsibilities

  • You will manage teams and resources, taking responsibility for ensuring that all output is delivered creatively and on schedule.
  • The successful candidate will have substantial experience in a senior journalistic role within a media environment.
  • Fluent in Yoruba and English (written and spoken), you will have experience of delivering output on media platforms.
  • An excellent knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential.
  • You will have recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria.
  • A good appreciation of the media situation in Nigeria and the wider target area, and how it is developing with the ability to anticipate changes in the market is essential.
  • You will report to the Head of West Africa and also work closely with other senior editorial figures in BBC World Service.
  • As the Editor, you will provide creative leadership and vision, to maximise the Yoruba language Service’s impact and potential in Nigeria, taking into account the changing media conditions in the target area.
  • You will approve content, ensuring that BBC editorial guidelines are adhered to consistently.
  • Experience of managing budgets is required.
  • You must have work authorisation for Nigeria.

Duties

  • Provide strong editorial and managerial leadership for the BBC Yoruba team in Nigeria, ensuring that our digital content conform to BBC Editorial Guidelines and that the needs of the audience are met.
  • Maintain a high standard of linguistic usage in the output to target areas
  • Play a leading role in the development of digital technology into the Service. To continue to encourage creativity by staff to make the most of the opportunities offered by new technologies and platforms.
  • Disseminate material and expertise to BBC Africa and the wider BBC. This will involve leading hub editorial meetings, being on standby at weekends and over public holidays.
  • Be responsible for selecting, planning and shaping output, editing scripts, briefing production teams, commissioning features, developing new content and drawing up transmission schedules.
  • Plan and implement modern and innovative and digital content and drawing and maintaining an effective scheduling of programming within the Igbo Service.
  • Maximise the opportunities for effective collaboration, multilingual working and commitment to digital production and the importance of social media.
  • Work with West Africa Planning Senior Broadcast Journalist, to achieve the most effective deployment, and commission the best content for all platforms.
  • Provide advice to other BBC departments on developments relating to the target area. This may involve participation in the output of other BBC departments.
  • Liaise with the Business Development Unit ensuring there is effective communication and productive relationships with broadcasting partners.
  • Collaborate and communicate with Pidgin and Igbo Editors so that information and staff are utilised effectively.
  • Manage and monitor the budget so as to meet financial targets for the Yoruba Service and regularly updating the Head of West Africa, languages.
  • Lead with the recruitment, planning of the training, to supervise and motivate staff. To set objectives and appraise.
  • Maintain the highest standards of work through briefings, playbacks, programme reviews and feedback. To manage challenging staffing issues with the support of the Head of West Africa, languages.

Skills & Experience

  • Fluency and up to date knowledge of Yoruba and the ability to type quickly and accurately.
  • Fluency in English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to lead, inspire and manage a team is essential.
  • Familiarity with news production systems and an understanding of social media.
  • Willingness to learn to operate new technology and adapt to different working methods.
  • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to a young audience.
  • Demonstrable interest in working in a multimedia environment and an interest in audience engagement.
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of Nigerian, African and international current affairs.
  • Good broadcasting voice and the ability to acquire the appropriate presentation style is desirable.
  • Willingness to understand and adopt BBC editorial guidelines and to abide by BBC Values.
  • Thorough knowledge of the aims, objectives and standards of BBC World Service and Global News.
