Job Title: Heath & Nutrition Advisor - Maternity Cover

Locations: Zamfara
Job type: Full-time
Contract Length:  4 months

Key Areas of Accountability

  • Provide technical assistance to state and LGA teams on health and nutrition, with particular focus on development of effective methodologies to improve nutritional knowledge, attitudes and practices of mothers
  • Contribute to developing programme strategy in health and nutrition in consultation with the programme team and other stakeholders
  • Contribute to development of targeting criteria and methodology for mothers receiving cash transfers and ensure approaches are sensitive to cultural and gender dynamics
  • Contribute to development of behaviour change communications strategy for the programme and ensure technical resources required for implementation have been factored into workplans and budgets
  • Support assessment preparation and planning for implementation, working in partnership with LGA authorities and health centres
  • In collaboration with LGA teams, plan sensitisation activities for targeted communities with focus on traditional leaders and other key stakeholders
  • Coordinate with health centres to carry out joint community mobilisation activities around nutrition
  • Conduct follow up monitoring of community mobilisation activities and document findings to feed into improved messaging
  • Ensure timely collection, compilation and analysis of quality data as well as production of quantitative and qualitative reports regarding all health and nutrition activities in the State
  • Provide technical review of programme reports in line with M&E framework
  • Conduct regular technical monitoring of health and nutrition activities and document findings to inform improvements in programme implementation
  • Ensure regular communication and sharing of lessons learned and challenges with the management and partners to inform implementation
  • Coordinate with the DFID-contracted Evaluation Team for conducting of activities at state and LGA level
  • Represent the CDGP in relevant state level forums for health and nutrition in coordination with other Save the Children programmes
  • Develop training plans for staff and government officials and health workers based on identified needs
  • Contribute to development and / or adaptation of training materials for programme staff and government officials and provide ongoing mentoring support
  • Participate in meetings, training and other assessment/events as required
  • Support strengthening of information flow between State and LGA

Skills & Experience
Essential:

  • At least a B.A. degree in Programme Management, Health and Nutrition, or related Social Science.
  • Strong programme management background.
  • Experience in community based nutrition programmes (CMAM and/or IYCF).
  • Technical expertise and experience in behaviour change communications programming and community mobilisation
  • Significant experience in planning, managing and delivering a programme, including costing, managing and monitoring budgets.
  • Experience in managing diverse HR teams
  • Effective resource planning, including commodities and technical expertise.
  • Computer literate.
  • Sound strategic thinking and planning skills, including ability to think creatively and innovate and to set priorities, manageable workplans and evaluate progress.
  • Ability to build support from staff across teams and across members, and to build the capacity of others.
  • Ability to work in partnership with government and other organizations’ staff.
  • Strong communications skills (both written and verbal) in English and Hausa.
  • Previous experience with local and international NGOs
  • Independence, adaptability and flexibility.
  • Commitment to team working and understanding of how to contribute.
  • Commitment to Save the Children mission, values and approach (includes child protection, equal opportunities and health and safety).

Desirable:

  • Master's degree in Public Health, Nutrition or other related subject.
